This is a calendar reference. Age alone does not provide a full birth chart or predict personality or future events.
How this is calculated
We find all Gregorian birth dates consistent with your completed-birthday age on the as-of date, then split that interval at Lunar New Year. Both endpoints are inclusive. A February 29 birthday reaches its next completed year on March 1 in a non-leap year under this tool’s month/day comparison. We use Lunar New Year, not Start of Spring.

Age is a useful starting point. With an as-of date, it gives an interval of possible birthdays, which can span more than one animal year. Enter your age above to see the possibilities, or go straight to the Chinese zodiac birth-date finder if you know your birthday.
39 years old: a Chinese zodiac example
This example is fixed to October 29, 2026, using international age. It is not a permanent animal sign for everyone aged 39.
A person who is 39 years old on that date was born from October 30, 1986 through October 29, 1987. Someone born in December 1986 has not yet had their 40th birthday; someone born in May 1987 has already turned 39.
- Tiger: October 30, 1986 through January 28, 1987.
- Rabbit: January 29, 1987 through October 29, 1987.
Lunar New Year began on January 29, 1987. That is why even a known Gregorian birth year may need a month and day to resolve the animal. The Chinese zodiac year chart lists the full inclusive animal-year ranges.
How age narrows the birth-date range
- Choose the date on which the age applies. A past age needs its original reference date.
- Use age in completed birthdays. Birth year can fall in either of two Gregorian years, depending on whether the birthday has passed.
- Check where that interval intersects Lunar New Year. Confirm with the full birthday when more than one animal is possible.
The form supports ages 0–120 and as-of dates from January 1, 1902 through today, no later than 2100. The entire possible birth-date range must fall on or after January 1, 1901; older ranges are rejected rather than shortened. The February 29 rule is explained under “How this is calculated.”
What if I know my Chinese nominal age?
Nominal age (虚岁, xu sui) counts years differently. Use the Chinese Age Calculator with a birth date to compare it with completed-birthday age. Subtracting one is not a reliable conversion in every case.

Frequently asked questions
4 common questions
- Can I find my Chinese zodiac sign from my age?
- Your age and a reference date narrow the possible birth dates. They do not always identify one animal: people of the same completed-birthday age can have different birth years, and animal years change at Lunar New Year. Use your full Gregorian birth date to confirm, especially for January and February birthdays.
- If I am 39 years old, what is my Chinese zodiac sign?
- It depends on the reference date and age convention. On October 29, 2026, someone aged 39 by completed birthdays was born between October 30, 1986 and October 29, 1987. That range includes Tiger and Rabbit dates. The same age checked in another year can give different animals.
- Should I enter international age or Chinese nominal age?
- Enter international age: completed Gregorian birthdays, starting at zero at birth. Chinese nominal age (xu sui) uses a different convention, commonly starting at one and increasing at Lunar New Year. Do not enter nominal age in this form; use the Chinese Age Calculator to compare the systems from a birth date.
- Why can an age range include three Chinese zodiac animals?
- The possible birth-date interval lasts about one Gregorian year. When Lunar New Year falls earlier in the second Gregorian year, that interval can cross two Lunar New Year boundaries and touch three animal years. This tool shows every intersecting range rather than assuming there are always two animals.
